Love the visual lay out. What happens when a philosopher encounters a gear list. I’m going to plagiarize it for an upcoming kayaking trip i’m leading.

Ha, thanks Josh. Always looking for ways to make information clearer to myself. Plagiarize away!

If you get truly inspired to share your incredible journeys graphically, this might help https://robots.thoughtbot.com/analyzing-minards-visualization-of-napoleons-1812-march. Of course, your campaigns all work out much better than this famous one did!

Personally, a week or more is a long trip with this kind of list. Thanks for asking!

With thanks for inspiration and instruction (!), here’s the gear list I put together for the river trip I’m leading in July.

Keep the rubber side down, wherever you are!

    Hi Joe,
I love reading and watching and taking in your vast and super helpful articles. I own a Moonlander and just love it. My question is would you bikepack on a Moonie with 3.8” tires and the set up for bikepacking/camping for several days ?
It’s a bit of a behemoth but as you have eluded in your Pugs write ups, it’s just a different feel and vibe and one that’s hard to explain.
Just to note, I’ve added additional braze-on’s to the frame and the offset fork to have triple anything bosses and a rear rack bracket to allow racks to fit.
    Thank you for your feedback!
    Raymond

      Hi Raymond,

Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it. As far as bikepacking on a Moonlander, in a word I’d say *absolutely*. I honestly think there are only two bikes one can want for bikepacking. One is a solid gravel/adventure type bike with 50mm tires and drop bars, and the other is a fat bike. The first, obviously is for more dirt road touring with the occasional foray into easy singletrack. And then the fat bike for everyone else. They’re unstoppable, stable, versatile and just flat out cool. The only caveat is that, if you’re traveling with friends and all of them are on, say, standard mountain bikes, you might psychologically feel like you’re a drag on the group or that you have to work harder. I think that’s not a big deal, but it’s worth knowing that you might feel that way in advance.

Other than that, fat bikes are to me the ideal rough conditions bikepacking platform. (You’ll also have to have in your mind how to repair and source parts that are peculiar to a moonlander, but, really, it’s rare for something to go wrong.)

      Enjoy!

      Joe
