Gear Carry on South America Tour (Revised)

Surly Pugsley with Revelate frame bag + Viscacha seat bag + Harness/Pocket + Gas Tank. Sea to Summit eVent dry bag. BikeBuddy bottle carrier with Minoura attachment. Osprey Talon 22 pack.

The difficulty and danger with sorting out kit for a long tour many days in advance is that it allows for rethinking. A rookie error, really, and a sorry contrast to grabbing wildly at bits and sundries a few hours before the flight departs. (I must be growing old.)

My resolve to travel in a traditional touring style — and to live with the beastly extra weight that that entails — has evaporated. In a fit and flurry, I’ve arrived back to bikepacking. Frame and seat bags can swallow an astonishing amount of gear when creatively packed. Everything heavy remains on the bike, and I’ll have under 8 lbs. on my back. The total weight savings in contrast to the four pannier setup is over 11 lbs. Of course, in this configuration the bike rides like a dream.

We’ll see how this goes, then.
