Twenty years ago, long before anyone used the words “adventure cycling” or “bikepacking,” many cyclists did those things* (and many of us imagined ourselves doing them).  This kind of riding was the premise of a story I wrote for the very first Dirt Rag fiction contest, conceived in the cyberpunk style.  Looking back at it — which I try not to do so as to avoid the stinging, blushing embarrassment of my youthful confusions — evidently I was trying to articulate an attitude that blends exploring and racing. These days, I would add a third crucial craving for me, namely visiting places that are as culturally and historically interesting as they are beautiful.

*The same is true if we substitute “One hundred years ago.”
