Somehow, and in spite of the many extraordinary things he’s done on bicycles and HPV’s, Rob had never been to Moab. This October we remedied that. I’ve ridden in Southern Utah more times than I can remember, but I knew that seeing the old classics through new eyes would be a treat.
Rob used this vacation as a chance to test out his new folding 29er design in rigid singlespeed configuration; naturally, I brought my rigid singlespeed race rig (with the small concession of gearing down to 34×19). What else would you use in Moab?
I felt pressure to arrange the proven standards into a compact trip:
Day 1: Arrive Salt Lake City ~4pm; collect luggage and rental car; drive 4.5 hours to Hurricane; night at Comfort Inn Zion.
Day 2: Ride Gooseberry Mesa; back to Hurricane; 2nd night at Comfort Inn Zion.
Day 3: Drive 2 hours to Thunder Mountain trailhead; ride Thunder Mountain; drive 4 hours to Moab; night at Apache Motel.
Day 4: Ride Porcupine Rim from top, loop from town; night at Apache Motel.
Day 5: AM ride Slickrock; afternoon/evening drive and short walks in Arches National Park; night at Apache Motel.
Day 6: Ride Sovereign area; night at Apache Motel.
Day 7: Ride Gold Bar Rim/Portal Trail loop from town.
Day 8: Drive 1.5 hours to Fruita; ride Kokopelli trails; night at Balanced Rock Motel.
Day 9: Ride 18 road trails; drive 4.5 hours to Salt Lake City; return car; Rob departs SLC @ 7pm
Day 10: Joe departs SLC @8:30am.
